Return to work after ACL surgery
Clinical procedure: ACL reconstruction.
Typical, evidence-anchored estimate only. It is not medical advice, not a prediction for your body, and not a substitute for your surgeon or clinician.
Every number on this page comes from a published study of real patients and links to its source. Return-to-work timing varies widely with the kind of job, the cohort studied, and the person — treat the figures as orientation, not clearance.
When you actually return is a decision made with your surgeon and, where relevant, occupational health. The data below describes cohorts, not your case.

Back to work
Back at work: 90% within 90 days
Across 13 studies (1,791 patients), 90.2% were back at work within 90 days. Average time varied by graft — about 46 days with quadriceps tendon, up to 84 with hamstring.
Back to work
Almost everyone gets back to some form of work
Across 13 studies and 1,791 patients, 99.1% eventually returned to work — about 1,781 of 1,791. The variation is in how long it takes, not whether it happens.
Back to work
How fast you get back to work depends a lot on the graft
In the same 1,791-patient review, average time back to work ranged from about 46 days with a quadriceps-tendon graft, 49 with a LARS graft, and 70 with an allograft, to about 84 days with a hamstring graft. Same surgery, very different timelines.

Pro basketball players mostly return, but it takes about a year
Across eight studies of professional basketball players, about 87 in 100 returned to play after ACL reconstruction and about 97 in 100 of those reached their pre-injury level, with a re-rupture rate near 2 in 100. The mean time to get back on court was about 367 days, roughly a year.
