Hip arthroscopy recovery: the documented setbacks

Clinical procedure: Hip arthroscopy for FAI.

Typical, evidence-anchored estimate only. It is not medical advice, not a prediction for your body, and not a substitute for your surgeon or clinician.

A recovery that dips is not automatically a recovery going wrong. The cards below are documented cohort patterns — moments in hip arthroscopy recovery where symptoms rose before they settled — shown at the weeks the studies place them, each with its source.

These are cohort patterns, not a promise that new pain is benign. New severe or rapidly worsening pain, fever or chills, a hot swollen calf, chest pain or breathlessness, wound redness or discharge, or new numbness or weakness are reasons to contact your surgical team promptly — not to wait it out.

what the studies document

Good to know

Hip-flexor flare-ups tend to peak around the two-to-three-month mark

When researchers tracked post-op hip-flexor (iliopsoas) tendinitis with ultrasound, it surfaced on average about 2.8 months after surgery, give or take a few weeks. That's a stretch where many people are ramping up activity, and it's exactly when this particular irritation tends to show up before settling, rather than at the start.

Good to know

A new front-of-hip pain often shows up weeks after surgery, not on day one

About 1 in 4 people (24%) developed hip-flexor (iliopsoas) irritation after hip arthroscopy. By design it wasn't even counted until the 6-week visit or later, specifically to tell it apart from ordinary early surgical pain — so a fresh ache at the front of the hip that arrives well after the operation is a documented pattern, not a sign of going backward.
