Return to work after knee replacement

Clinical procedure: Total knee replacement.

Typical, evidence-anchored estimate only. It is not medical advice, not a prediction for your body, and not a substitute for your surgeon or clinician.

Every number on this page comes from a published study of real patients and links to its source. Return-to-work timing varies widely with the kind of job, the cohort studied, and the person — treat the figures as orientation, not clearance.

When you actually return is a decision made with your surgeon and, where relevant, occupational health. The data below describes cohorts, not your case.

Back to work

Back to work around week 13, on average

Meta-analysis puts mean return to work at 12.9 weeks, with a wide honest range (5-42 weeks) driven by job demands. About 90% are back within a year.

Back to work

Which activities people pick back up, and which fade

In a survey of 784 recreational athletes, low-impact pursuits held roughly steady across surgery while higher-impact ones thinned out. Swimming stayed flat at 62.7 percent before versus 63.6 percent after, and cycling held at 62.3 versus 59.0 percent. Running fell from 84.0 to 48.5 percent and skiing from 72.7 to 45.5 percent. Dropping a high-impact sport while keeping a low-impact one is a common shape here, not a personal failure.

How the activity tiers look a decade-plus out

At a mean of nearly 15 years after surgery, 70.9 percent of previously active patients were still doing some sport. Split by demand, 71.3 percent kept up low-impact activity, 43.7 percent stayed with intermediate-impact, and 16.4 percent continued high-impact sport. The gentler activities are the ones most likely to stay in the picture over the long run.
