A scar that stays tender, and a few that thicken
In one series of 82 operated feet, the complications recorded alongside infections included five feet with persistent hypersensitive scars and four that formed local keloids. A scar that frays or thickens for a while is a documented part of the picture, not a sign the surgery did not take.

In a plantar-approach excision study followed about 4.5 years, a complication of any kind showed up in 7.1 percent of operations and scar-specific problems in 5.2 percent. Read the other way, more than nine in ten operations had no recorded complication.

Some feet carry more than one neuroma at once
When surgeons reviewed pooled studies of people having a neuroma removed, about 14 percent presented with more than one neuroma in the same foot rather than a single one. Finding a second one is part of the picture for a meaningful slice of people, not a rarity.

Altered feeling in the web space is the common state
In a long-term series of 98 feet, numbness was found in 72 percent of them and normal sensibility in only 26 percent. Altered or absent feeling in the web space is the common state after this operation, not the exception.
Where it shows up
Numbness between the toes is part of the deal
Because the operation removes the nerve, numbness in the web space between the toes is expected and usually permanent. In one comparison cohort residual numbness was present in 20 of 42 feet and was bothersome in only 7 of them. It is missing sensation, not a sign of a problem.
The bigger picture
Where the cut is changes the early weeks, not the result
A meta-analysis of five studies and 347 feet found pain and function end up the same whether the incision is on the top or the sole of the foot. A top (dorsal) incision lets you put weight through the foot sooner; a sole (plantar) incision tends to leave a more tender scar.

Desk work returns sooner than time on your feet
UK guidance puts time off work at roughly two to four weeks for sedentary roles and four to six weeks for jobs spent on your feet, with heavy manual work longer. A top-of-foot incision tends to return people to work sooner than a sole incision.
